VITAMIN E in cosmetics: is it effective or useless.

Opinion of GREEN FACTORY technologists.

Basically there are two opinions for using vitamins in cosmetic products. Some experts say that any vitamins are put in cosmetics to make label claims because they don’t really have much effect but they do sell products.  Others say that those really work, so the more vitamins in your cream, the better. We think that perhaps both are a bit unfair. Let’s dive into it!

The primary vitamins used by cosmetic formulators include vitamin A, C and E.  It is more or less clear with A & C. Those has been proven as strong antioxidants and are used in most of the cosmetic products, whether it is face cream or nail base coat. Vitamin A decreases inflammation, helping the immune system and regulating growth of epidermal cells.  It has been shown to reverse photo-aging and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It also works as a treatment for acne and may have skin lightening effects. Vitamine C is a potent antioxidant which neutralizes damaging free radicals.

But be aware: as these vitamins are strongly active ingredients, a small amount is enough in creams. In pure form, for example, vitamin A and C  can cause adverse reactions such as allergies, or contact dermatitis. Therefore you shouldn’t play with pharmaceutical vitamins, those which are prescribed for oral use for example, they might do you worse. And in right proportions they act just right.

As for vitamin E, it is very important ingredient used in cosmetics too.  To start with vitamin E is well known as a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free radicals. Free radicals, which are caused by several factors including metabolism, pollution and UV radiation, are oxygen molecules that have lost an electron and need to find another one quickly. They do so by robbing another molecule of it, and this molecule in turn becomes a free radical in need of another electron, thus initiating a chain reaction that causes havoc on the skin and leads to premature aging. So, vitamin E is capable of breaking this chain reaction.

Did you know by the way that actually vitamin E is naturally present in your skin? Nature is so wise! Unfortunately, it depletes when exposed to the sun (and also with aging process) so it’s important to include this powerful ally in our skincare routine. In addition, Vitamin E promotes maintenance of synthesis of a collagen and elastin, it is an excellent moisturizer. It strengthens the skin’s natural barrier, reducing water loss. This improves the levels of hydration in the skin. It is considered to be a protector ingredient since it is a major free-radical scavenger.  Free radicals are very damaging to the skin tissue as we have mentioned earlier. So, topical application of vitamin E results in skin smoothening, moisturizing, prevention of pre-mature skin-aging, and suppression of UV-induced erythema. In the point of UV-protection it is time to recall our favorite term SYNERGY, which we, being a smart cosmetic brand, use very often. It means that all ingredients work together even better, improving benefits of each other.

Thus vitamin E shows stronger effect in combination with vitamin C, when talking of their protective properties. Whereas one without another in larger amounts is useless and might not show any effect at all. So, the more is not always the better at all!

In all GREEN FACTORY products Vitamin E and vitamin C work together, same as in our body. Vitamin E improves effect of Vitamin C and vice versa.  Besides, working on new formulas we always follow new developments in the chemistry of VITAMINS. Thus we use the low-molecular and “protected” from premature oxidation vitamin complexes that promote even stronger effect.

Magical Vitamin E also has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe irritations, thus helping keeping skin in good condition and looking younger for longer. Isn’t it what we all want from our cream?

Now, we are sure that there is something you don’t know about vitamin E. In fact, it is often used as a preservative in a variety of beauty products, especially natural/organic ones. Vitamin E, being very strong antioxidant, prevents oxidation (rancidity) of oils very well. You know that many active oils are oxidized on air very quickly, reducing their properties day by day. In GREEN FACTORY, adding vitamin E in right proportions and forms let us use less of preservatives without losing the quality of the product. We make sure your cream is under protection and really works!
